A few weeks ago I went on a vacation to visit some of my best friends and celebrate one of our “club” getting married.
When we were in grad school, we used to hear about the idea of coping cups. Picture a giant cup and with each experience that is challenging or emotionally draining, you pour sand in the cup. The more of those experiences, the more your coping cup is filled. When it gets to the brim, it is hard to cope with anything. But, there are things that take away some of the sand. There are friends and family and people who support you or tricks that you have up your sleeve that help lessen the amount of sand or free up some space.
We spent the long weekend bike riding, ice cream eating, beaching, and celebrating. It was everything that I could hope it would be and if my life coping cup was feeling a little too full, these people and that weekend made all kinds of room.
